At Nova Mental Health, we provide evidence-informed mental skills coaching to help athletes build confidence, strengthen focus, enhance performance, and continue enjoying their sport. Our support is designed for athletes experiencing competition stress, mental blocks, negative self-concept, difficulty staying focused under pressure,, frustration with setbacks, or challenges with maintaining motivation. We help athletes build mental tools, confidence, and focus strategies and skills they can use in training, competition, and everyday life -including learning to respond effectively to pressure in sport.
Sessions are practical, supportive, and approachable - focused on skill-building, mindset strengthening, and building long-term resilience. While our work is rooted in sport psychology principles, it is provided through mental skills coaching - not counselling - to support confidence, focus, and performance.

Mental Skills Coach
Dr. Gabriela Ionita is a mental performance coach, former competitive swimmer, and parent of a young athlete, combining evidence-informed sport psychology knowledge with lived sport experience. Her interest in mental skills and performance mindset work was sparked by supporting her own child through a mental block in gymnastics, which deepened her interest in applying psychological principles to help young athletes thrive both mentally and physically. She works with athletes in all sports but has a particular interest in gymnastics.
To ensure the highest quality of support, Dr. Ionita often turns to the research literature and recently completed a study supervising an honours student exploring the strategies for overcoming mental blocks from a coach’s perspective. Recognizing the limited information available on how to support gymnasts with mental blocks, Dr. Ionita has begun writing a book to share tools and strategies that can help parents, coaches, and gymnasts be better equipped to manage mental blocks and support athlete confidence and performance.

Fees
- Individual Sessions (50 minutes): $250 per session
